The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep of this lovely market town, with woodland walks and cycle routes and the Lake District, the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, and the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach.

Barnard Castle's high street is a real gem, offering fantastic independent shops, pubs and cafes, as well as a weekly market.

The impressive Bowes Museum, with its colourful collection of European art is also located in Barnard Castle.

The town is well known for its antique shops. Ideal for browsing on those rainy days. Starting from the historical Butter Market, the antiques pave the paths of the Bank heading towards the River Tees.

Nearby attractions include the breathtaking High Force, England's highest waterfall, the historic Raby Castle, stunning Witham Hall, Eggleston Hall and its walled gardens and Egglestone Abbey, an abandoned monastery on the banks of the River Tees.

Why not visit the historic market towns of Richmond and Ripon, not to mention the northern Dales towns of Reeth and Hawes.

Less than an hour’s drive away is the beautiful city of Durham and its magnificent cathedral which is well worth a visit.

With the Yorkshire Dales National Park within an hour’s drive, this cottage makes for a fantastic base to explore the stunning County Durham countryside.
